Every fast food chain has a salad. The useful question is how many of its real meals fit a weight loss day. We scored 35 fast food chains on one simple measure: the share of their main meals that have 500 calories or less and at least 20 g of protein. A meal like that keeps you full without taking a third of your daily budget.

The data is each chain's own published nutrition for the 2026 menu, from MenuTrim's database. Drinks, desserts and kids' meals are left out; chains with fewer than eight main meals in the data are left out too.

Sandwich chains do well if you choose the size

Subway and Jersey Mike's rank high because a 6-inch or a protein bowl is easy to keep under 500 calories. The same sandwich as a footlong usually doubles. The chain is healthy only at the size you order.

Burger and wing chains are harder, not impossible

Popeyes, Auntie Anne's, Dutch Bros, Wingstop have no main meal in our data under 500 calories with 20 g of protein. That does not make them off limits: a single patty, a small order of wings or a lettuce wrap can fit, and MenuTrim shows what each change does. It does mean the default order there needs more care.

What this ranking does not measure

It counts meals, not sales. A chain with many light options can still sell mostly heavy combos, and a chain with few can have the one order you love. It also leaves out sodium and sugar; for those, see the chain pages, which list every meal with all the numbers.

How to use this ranking

Pick the chains near you that score well and learn two orders at each. For the full menu of any chain, open its page from the table; for the single best order at every chain, see our healthy fast food options guide.
